Some thoughts on tablets in education

After the topic of tablet-style devices recently came up in discussions on Sugar Labs' "It's an education project" mailing-list as well as while talking to various people in Montevideo I felt like summing up my own thoughts on this topic.


Like it or not, touch is here to stay

The short version

I think tablet-style devices could be quite well suited for use by primary-school children however I don't think that the products currently available or foreseeable to be available within the next two or three years will be well suited for secondary-school use.

Apple iPad and OLPC XO-3 Vaporware Product Line

So, the XO-2 has moved from promise to hope to scrap, and has made way for a tablet-style, iPhoneiPad-like XO-3 (Read about the 3.0 model at Forbes and Engadget, with the now-in-production 1.5 and the in-planning 1.75 XOs, both using the current design but with faster processors.

If there ever was proof that Nicholas Negroponte wants a laptop project, not an education project, its the slick XO-3 images that Yves Behar and Nicholas Negroponte strutted out in Andy Greenberg's fluff piece "The $75 Future Computer".
